Children are a beautiful blessing to us from the Lord. I can remember when I was a young woman, I saw two of the most beautiful babies; a boy and a girl being strolled around by their mother as we walked in downtown Chicago near the lake front and the Buckingham fountain. Without thinking I went over and complimented this mother on her adorable children. Then again, without thinking much about it I said out loud to the Lord, "Lord, this is exactly what I want, two beautiful children, a boy and a girl just like this." Unbeknownst to me, the Lord was listening, because some years later He gave me exactly what I asked for; two of the most beautiful children, both inside and out that a mother could have asked for.
I prayed and asked God for those children then, I prayed all the while pregnant with them asking the Lord to give me healthy babies, good babies that would sleep through the night, beautiful babies, babies that I could teach them about the Lord, take them to church and train them up in the way they should go. And upon their arrival the prayers never stopped. Prayers for their safety, prayers for a good life, prayers for favor, prayers to heal them when they got sick, prayers they would do well in school, show compassion to the underdog and the less fortunate, even prayers for their future mates to prepare them to be a good husband and a good wife and that they would grow up to be productive contributing citizens to the country and to the Kingdom of God.
As I look back and reflect I see how God answered those prayers every step of the way.
He heard the early morning, as everyone else still slept, before sunrise prayers.
He heard the late in the midnight hour rocking and patting the backs of a sick and crying baby prayers for healing, comfort and peace,
He heard the watching from the sidelines prayers for my child not to be hurt playing the sometimes brutal sport of football, and for asthma not to flare up up as the other child ran like the wind in her event at the local, state and national track meets.
He heard the prayers of this mother who prayed for their protection and that they would return home safely as their child quickly closed the front door on their way out after dark to a friends house or a school party in their teenage years.
He heard the prayers as their father and I left them in their college dorm rooms to begin a life truly on their own praying that all you've taught them they've really listened and can now make the good decisions. Praying that they would be safe from all hurt, harm and danger, praying they get good grades and study and not wastes your money, LoL!
And now that they are grown and have gone out into the world and have families of their own, my prayers for them don't stop, but are yet compounded because now they include grandchildren and all living in different states facing their own grownup challenges of family, career, and their own personal struggles. This world has changed so much since they were babies and teenagers and my prayers although consistent and the same in some areas have had to change and shift with the ever-changing world climate as well.
I wrote all this as a testimony to the faithfulness of God. To encourage you to never stop praying for your children because God hears and answers the heartfelt prayers of a mother and father for their children; He is a Father by the way, He understands. If you're finding it difficult to know what to pray for your children, especially if they've gone astray, you're angry and/or bitter toward them or the've broken your heart, begin simply by sitting in the presence of God your Father as His child and let your heart speak; your words will soon begin to flow. Let them! Don't think too hard, simply let the issues from your heart pour out to your Father concerning your children: that's prayer! You're doing it! Then go to the word of God, find scripture to pray over your children. God always responds to His word. Some examples you can use:
Psalm 91 for their protection
Psalm 92 for their growth and flourishing
